Discipline Policy

During the first week of school we discussed our need for classroom rules. We have come up with a few basic rules and have agreed to follow them to create a positive classroom community. We also discussed the consequences for breaking the rules as well as rewards for good behavior. The following rules are posted in the science lab:

Our Classroom Rules

1. Listen carefully.

2. Follow directions.

3. Work quietly.

4. Clean your table before you leave.

5. Raise your hand to speak.

Our Behavior Chart

Each day every student starts the day with his/her clothes pin on green. The green color shows good behavior.  If he/she breaks a rule, then the student must move their clothes pin to yellow.  Now the student has a warning.  If the student continues to break rules they will move their clothes pin to orange and etc.... Each color indicates a consequence:

Green = Having a great day!

Yellow = Warning ( a verbal reminder to remember our rules)

Orange = Child will be asked to sit aside from the group.

Red = Parent will be notified by note or e-mail.

Blue = Child will be sent to speak with the Director.

The purpose of this approach is to involve each student in the responsibility for his/her actions. The colored paper is a visual reminder of what is expected each day.  The reminder is a gentle, but clearly established system for the child to monitor his/her behavior.

Positive Recognition

To promote good behavior in the science lab, the students will be able to participate in "Science Centers Galore" every other month. There will be several free choice centers for them to explore in. If a student has 3 or more days on orange that month, they will not be able to participate in the "Science Centers Galore" and be given a different assignment to complete. Another way I recognize well behaved students is with stamps on an individual card. They will be given daily to those students on task. Once they have 10 stamps in a row they may go to the treasure chest.

I appreciate your support of this discipline policy.

Thank you,

Mrs. Stone
